DotNetZip - Zip files and folder (Not a paid service, a FREE service) - A open source library

CodePlex now has a open source that can help C#.Net developers to Zip files and folders without using 3rd party tools or dll's. It is free of cost. Documentation for the library can be viewed here.

Following are what DotNetZip says that we can accomplish with their dll.

  1. an ASP.NET app that dynamically creates ZIP files and allows a browser to download them
  2. a Windows Service that periodically zips up a directory for backup and archival purposes
  3. a WPF program that modifies an existing archive - renaming entries, removing entries from an archive, or adding new entries to an archive
  4. a Windows Forms app that creates AES-encrypted zip archives for privacy of archived content.
An administrative script in PowerShell or VBScript that performs backup and archival.
a WCF service that receives a zip file as an attachment, and dynamically unpacks the zip to a stream for analysis
  5. creating zip files from stream content, saving to a stream, extracting to a stream, reading from a stream
  6. creation of self-extracting archives.

All this can be achieved using a free dll that the open source provides. And if you want to customize the control, you can go ahead and do it.

Example code on how to use this library is available here.

              • Silverlight session from Vic was a eye-opener on the new features of the latest version (i.e Silverlight 3)

On the closing note and to go by the proverb LAST BUT NOT LEAST style, management session by Sanath (not Sanath Jayasuriya :)  ) from SymIndia was an hair rising session. Though the name tells management session, it was not a management session in my perspective. It was a personal development session or a confidence booster session.

One information from the session is about Nick Vujicic, a person WITHOUT arms or legs and who came successful in life. You can visit his site. A Video on Nick in YouTube here.

Interested people can subscribe to the group at this site.

Waiting eagerly for the next session on June  21st.

Talking about Worm infecting MS Windows may fool on April 1 - National News – News – MSN India - News
Conficker, a new breed of self-updating PC worms that has infiltrated nearly every Windows 2000 and XP machines, has largely affected users in countries like China, Brazil, Russia, and India which also have some of the highest numbers of pirated copies of Windows in the world. Almost 607,172 IPs (internet addresses) in India and overall 10 million IPs have been affected by Conficker, according to estimates made by researchers at SRI International.

Talking about Indian IT geek develops digital 'sixth sense'

The brain behind this device is the 28-year-old Indian-born Pranav Mistry, a researcher at the Media Lab, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The "Sixth Sense" device (patented by MIT) comprises a pocket projector, mirror and web camera bundled in a wearable pendant-like mobile. The projector can turn anything into a touch screen. The webcam (and colour-coded finger-gloves worn on the index finger and thumb) can recognise the movements of a user's hands, which enables gesture-commands.

Custom page content for newly added files in VS2008

Every individual, every client, every project and every company has its / his / her own style of coding standards. I have a style of commenting code when I create a aspx file, like when it was created / modified, who create / modified and why. With this in practice sometimes it was tough to copy and paste format and content from any of the old files.

Normal aspx.cs format that VS would add.

              Default_Content

My desired format of aspx.cs when I add a file.

              After_Template_Change

I tried various methods for this.

I added my content in to the template that VS uses when creating any new items like aspx, aspx.cs,.cs.... files and there it goes. Whenever I add a file I get the default format that I want.

Location where you can find this templates in your system are

              • if it is an web application project, then make the changes in this folder
                (<installation drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ProjectTemplatesCache\CSharp\Web\1033\WebApplicationProject.zip)
              • if it is an web site do the changes here
                (<installation drive>\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common7\IDE\ItemTemplatesCache\CSharp\Web\1033\WebForm.zip  )

You can modify any of the following new item templates

              Types of New Items

Note: Please back up the content that you modify before doing any changes as VS may stop working as desired because of an incorrect change
